The Sarnia Library Presents a FREE Science Fiction Film Festival

Sarnia, ON – The Sarnia Library is presenting a free science fiction film festival from Monday July 30th to Wednesday August 1st. The films will start each night at 7:00 PM and an optional discussion will follow immediately after the screening at Ups and Downs pub. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13 because of intense violence and action, images of destruction, language, some drug use and brief nudity. Please call the Reference Department at 519 337-3291 for more information or to confirm your attendance.

Monday July 30, 2007 "Metropolis" Directed by Tarô Rin
The nature of life and love, the rights of the down trodden and a father’s rejection are all examined in this visually rich animated movie set in a futuristic city. The movie, while inspired by the 1926 Fritz Lang classic, boldly sets its own course.

Tuesday July 31, 2007 "Serenity" Written and Directed by Joss Whedon
On the surface the creator of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” created a western set in space. However at its heart is the question, what is more important, personal freedom or a safe society? The movie showcases Whedon’s talent for writing snappy dialogue and creating interesting offbeat characters.

Wednesday August 1, 2007 "Children of Men" Directed by Alfonso Cuarón
This movie, starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine, is based on the science fiction novel by the noted mystery author P.D. James. It deals with what happens to the world after children stop being born. A scene with a crying baby takes on a whole new meaning. The movie is like a cross between Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” and the gritty “Blackhawk Down.”
